What is TikTok Shop?


TikTok Shop started in Southeast Asia and launched in the US and UK in September 2023. The platform is designed to meet users where they are, allowing them to purchase products instantly while watching their favorite influencers recommend them. As reviews are a key factor in purchase decisions, our goal was to increase the quantity, quality, and credibility of product reviews without disrupting the user experience.

Design

We introduced a usage-based trial that grants users 5 AI enhancements, triggered at the moment of highest intent.

Post-Recording “Aha” Moment

  • AI automatically generates titles, summaries, and chapters

  • Users immediately see the value applied to their own content

Usage-Based Trial with Counter

  • Users receive 5 AI uses instead of a time-based trial

  • A persistent counter shows remaining uses:

    • “3 of 5 enhancements remaining”

  • Encourages intentional usage

  • Reinforces AI as a valuable resource

  • Users enhance videos and see:

    • Reduced need to re-record

    • Faster sharing

  • Upgrade prompts appear only after meaningful usage

  • Focus on quality and efficiency, not restricting access

One-Click Upgrade at Peak Intent

  • After the 5th use, users see an upgrade module:

  • One-click upgrade enabled using existing billing info removes checkout friction

Supporting Growth Loops

  • “Enhanced with AI” indicators on shared videos

  • Encourages viewers to create their own Looms

  • Expands adoption beyond the original user

Outcome

6% Increased AI feature adoption among Business tier (Standard) users YoY

  • Improved upsell conversion for AI-enabled plans (Premium)

  • Stronger performance among high-intent users compared to time-based trials

Key Learning:
Usage-based trials are most effective for users with established workflows.
Trial design should adapt to user maturity and behavior, not rely on a one-size-fits-all approach.
